Moving to Malta: Land of milk and honey?

by Philipp M. Sauerborn

A few times I have been asked by friends and clients if it’s worth it to move to Malta. I would like to give “no” as an answer. If the obvious does not appear to you it might just not be right for you. But of course I don’t tell them no but always take the time to start a small test, if you like, which then hopefully leads them to the answer themselves.

If you are to describe your own “land of milk and honey”, your dream destination of living – what attributes would you throw on top of your table of imagination?

Surely, among others, there is

  • Sun
  • Good weather
  • Warm or mild climate
  • low crime
  • public order
  • good infrastructure
  • high quality living
  • good food
  • international people
  • vibrant culture
  • good restaurants
  • moderate living costs
  • low taxes
  • respected government
  • good traffic connection to other countries
  • beaches and the sea
  • nightlife
  • security
  • freedom
  • friendly people
  • good business environment
  • fast broadband
  • accessibility

Guess what, the country that you have been describing is the country where I am living, Malta.  So much also for the never ending discussion that people only move to Malta because of the tax. It’s just one reason of many. Moving to Malta does not mean you have to live in Malta to the end of your days – but why not for a few years? Make some money, live the dream and then see where live takes you? If the only thing you need to work is a PC and a phone why not work by the Mediterranean as you base? And travel to your business appointments when you need to?

So much for the test.

Some at least understand the worth that living in Malta can create, not only for now but for the very long term, when you think of retirement and how to build up a financial pillow. Some people still don’t get it or some a still very much attached to another country, which of course they cannot be blamed for. But Malta might then not be the right destination for them or they might not be right for Malta. I am and surely it is for me. It has brought be nothing but progress in all aspects of live and I am grateful to live here.
