Sitting right in the heart of the Mediterranean between Europe and Africa, the Maltese archipelago is primarily made up of three islands: Malta, Gozo, and Comino. The crystal-clear, turquoise water is incredibly clean, breaking impressively against the islands' rocky coastlines.

Malta really does have something for everyone, offering a mix of relaxation and adventure. Boat tours are particularly popular here, and for good reason—the islands are perfectly suited for exploring by sea. In my opinion, every holiday in Malta should include at least one of the three tours I'm outlining below. The good news is that these excursions are generally suitable even for those with sensitive stomachs, as the sea around Malta is typically quite calm with little swell.

Boat Tour to the Blue Grotto

You will find the traditional Maltese fishing boats—known as Luzzus—in every harbour. They are incredibly colourful and painted with traditional symbols meant to bring luck. One of the most popular trips takes you to the Blue Grotto. This is a genuine natural wonder that can really only be appreciated from the sea.

During the trip, you get to enjoy a spectacular play of light and shadow inside the various small caves the boat passes through. The only downside is that the trip is over quite quickly. The cost for this short but memorable excursion usually sits between €15.00 and €25.00.

The Blue Lagoon – A Trip Worth Taking

Another unforgettable option is the trip to the Blue Lagoon, located between the islands of Comino and Cominotto. The sight of the lagoon is, quite honestly, overwhelming. It is easily one of Malta's scenic highlights. If you enjoy snorkelling, this is the place to do it during your stopover.

A day trip to the Blue Lagoon typically costs between €20.00 and €35.00. The price often includes a cold buffet and typical Maltese wine. I'd recommend planning this excursion well in advance when booking your trip, as it is very popular.

Cruising Around Malta

A particularly special excursion is the full 'Round Malta' cruise. This takes you past the island's most beautiful beaches, rock formations, fishing villages, and grottos. It is also the best vantage point to truly appreciate the architectural beauty of the capital, Valletta.

This day trip usually includes a buffet in the price, which ranges from €30.00 to €50.00. I highly recommend making a reservation for this one.
