Dubai has transformed within just a few decades from a desert emirate into a global business hub. For entrepreneurs from the UK, the appeal is straightforward: 0% personal income tax. But since June 2023, the tax picture has changed – and the consequences are more significant than many people realise.

The Tax System in Dubai

The introduction of 9% corporate tax in June 2023 has shifted Dubai's position, but it hasn't made it unattractive. The threshold of AED 375,000 (roughly £80,000) means smaller businesses still pay 0%. In a Free Zone, the effective tax rate on qualifying income can remain at 0%. One important consideration for British nationals relocating: whilst the UK maintains its double tax agreement with the UAE, how you structure your affairs matters enormously for HMRC compliance.

Living and Working in Dubai

Dubai offers impressive infrastructure, political stability and an international business community. The city sits at the crossroads of Europe, Asia and Africa. Living costs are higher than Malta or Cyprus, but the absence of income tax goes some way to offsetting that. A Golden Visa (from AED 2 million investment) gives you long-term residency security. Worth knowing: from June to September it's extremely hot – many expats head back to Europe for the summer.
