Staying Fit in Malta: Gyms, Sports, and My Recommendations
Last updated: 10 February 2026

It feels like the world is becoming more fitness-conscious every day. While home workouts had their massive hype phase (remember the Wii?), gyms and fitness studios are currently back in full swing. During my consultations at Dr. Werner & Partners, clients often ask me: "Philipp, is there actually a decent fitness scene in Malta?"
Gyms in Malta: Plenty of Options
To answer that question right away: Yes, you can absolutely get a good workout in Malta. There are plenty of gyms offering both indoor and outdoor facilities. You will find most of them in the densely populated expat hubs, specifically St. Julian's and Sliema. You can find a brief overview of some locations here.
Some of these facilities even offer a pool alongside standard gym equipment. And you can probably imagine: after a strenuous workout and a shower, cooling off in a pool is exactly what you need in the Maltese climate.
Independent Trainers and Alternative Training
Beyond the standard gyms, there are numerous other ways to stay active here. Independent fitness trainers offer countless courses, such as guided jogging tours, yoga, or Kettlebell classes. I want to touch on Kettlebell specifically because it is something I personally enjoy.
If you aren't familiar with it, Kettlebell training involves using ball-shaped weights with handles to combine cardio with strength training. The video above gives you a pretty good idea of what it's all about. The weights typically range from 4 to 32 kg. It is definitely an intense sport, but in my experience, it offers a perfect, comprehensive full-body workout.
Jogging with a View
Another option, of course, is traditional jogging. The running routes along the coast are incredibly popular—running by the sea is a highlight—but even if you head a bit inland, the scenery can be quite impressive.
Whether you are in Malta to set up your company, for other business reasons, or just on holiday, you don't have to put your fitness regime on hold. From traditional sports like swimming, jogging, or football (Malta actually has two football leagues) to modern strength and cardio training in the gym, everything is available. I'd recommend taking a quick look at what offers are available near your accommodation or office before you arrive so you can hit the ground running.
