Where to Play Golf in Malta

When people think of Malta, lush green landscapes and manicured English lawns aren't usually the first things that come to mind—unless perhaps you're thinking of Gozo. Instead, Malta is known for being a microstate, a tourist hub, and, of course, for its tax benefits. However, even on this small island, you can still play one of the world's most popular sports—though your options are limited to just one course.

Teeing Off at the Royal Malta Golf Club

The green of choice is the Royal Malta Golf Club. It is an 18-hole course played as a Par 68. I have to admit, I'm not exactly a golf pro myself. But from what I can tell, the course feels very natural with its diverse vegetation and has a unique atmosphere—partly thanks to the private chapel on the grounds. The club has been operating for over a century and now offers facilities for other sports as well.

Golfing in Malta: Costs and Requirements

Playing golf in Malta isn't necessarily cheap. The course, located in Marsa, charges green fees ranging from €47 to €70 depending on the day. Especially during the summer months, I'd strongly recommend booking a tee time in advance.

You can rent a standard set of clubs for €25, while a premium set (brands like TaylorMade, Cobra, or Callaway) costs an extra €10. A trolley is available for €5, and if you want to rent an electric buggy, you'll be looking at €38.

Regarding the dress code, the classic rules apply: polo shirts and tailored trousers or shorts are a must—definitely no jeans. Generally, you need to present a handicap card to prove your proficiency. However, I've seen exceptions made in the past, so I'd advise giving them a call beforehand to check.

If you were wondering where to play golf in Malta, the Royal Malta Golf Club is your answer. While the club operates with virtually no competition on the island, this hasn't negatively impacted the quality of the course. It's well worth a visit for a round of golf in this unique setting.
